Movies?

Postby adammwarwas » Tue Jan 03, 2012 8:14 pm

For those of you who don't know, I am a HUGE movie buff. I am also very critical of movies. Having this "off topic" section of the forums will allow me to talk movies with some of you.

Last night I watched Straw Dogs as the trailer duped me into thinking it'd be a good horror flick. It was terrible on all accounts.

What have you guys seen lately?

I saw the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie, "on stranger tides".
If you like the 3 previous movies this one will be worth watching.

Not a big fan of the movies these days, just old fashioned I guess. I did go to Grown Ups and The Expendables and thought they were pretty awsome. Ok now Freds can give me a hard time.

Haven't seen the new Pirates yet, Malte. Got bored with that series after the first one.

Wasn't a fan of Grown Ups, Johnny... but I'm picky when it comes to comedies, not a fan of the Sandler humor these days. Haven't seen the Expendables, might have to check that out.

Mrs. Grant is the primary movie selector at our house Adam, and we were suddenly watching Oceans 13 the other night. I think she might like the actors more than the movie itself. Lot of talk about War Horse, hope to see that, and I would also like to see J. Edgar, as I am a big fan of true-based movies, historical, and political/military strategy movies. I used to like the raw humor ones, but I tend to be drifting away after the classics like Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Christmas Vacation, etc. Saw Denzel in the one about the runaway train recently. Wow, that was quite an event. And the one where the mountain hiker has to cut his arm off --- another freaky event in history.

What's your opinion of Tom Hanks, Adam? He sure has impressed me over the years.

Hey, Coach... you HAVE seen Band of Brothers, right? If not, it is bar none the greatest war movie/series out there. Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, its follow up "The Pacific", Tora Tora Tora, and even full metal jacket all pale in comparison to Band of Brothers. I recommend reading the Stephen Ambrose book first, a great historian that will be greatly missed, but it will give you an appreciation for how detailed his account of the true story was... and how true Tom Hanks and company stayed to the story in creating the film.

And, yes, I have always liked Tom Hanks... ever since watching Big and Turner and Hooch as a kid. I wasn't into a few like Castaway and You've Got Mail and that weird noir movie with Jude Law... but Catch Me If You Can is one of my favorites.

The wife and I are currently making our way through the series "Parenthood." Like it a lot more than I ever thought I would. We also recently watch Crazy Stupid Love, and it shocked me how much I liked it... I thought it was a chick flick, but its actually just a very funny movie.

On the war movies front, one of my all time favorites is still Patton played by George C. Scott. Kelleys Heroes is pretty good but I'm a die hard Clint Eastwood fan. I'll go with Adam on Platoon and I just watched Full Metal Jacket last night. Adam I'll definately try to find Band of Brothers per your recommidation.

Big movie buff myself. I tend to lean away from stuff like Pirates, Expendables, Fast and the Furious, etc... Never really been an action movie type.

Haven't seen Band of Brothers though I have heard very good things about it. Some day maybe I'll get a little more time and will be able to check it out.

My favorite movie is actually an Itailian movie called "Life is Beautiful," directed by Roberto Bengini. It's about a man and his son being sent to a concentration camp during the Holocaust. Incredible movie. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118799/

I have not seen Band of Brothers, but willI soon upon your recommendation. I feel as strongly about Crimson Tide, followed closely by Hunt for Red October. Those are two must see submarine flicks.

Hanks was so good in Road to Perdition and Apollo 13.

I have to second Band of Brothers......that is some high quality stuff. I like my share of war movies....all those above mentioned, plus Blackhawk Down......I also like Lord of the Rings, Braveheart, 300, King Arthur, The Patriot (Mel Gibson). I wouldnt call myself a Movie buff, but I like a wide range of stuff....Those Parenthood movies are fun, I love spoofs like The Holy Grail, Blazing Saddles, etc. I also love movies that tug at your insides such as Dead Poets Society, A Beautiful Mind, and The Family Man.

The Outlaw Josey Wales trips my trigger......and just for you Adam, I love the old John Wayne flick, North to Alaska.

Edit: love Apollo 13 Coach!

AHHH Count, The Outlaw Josie Whales is right at the top with Caddyshack and Smokey and the Bandit for me. The whole Lethal weapon and Rocky series come to mind also. And man how could I forget all the Dirty Harry movies. Count mentioned Blazing Sadles, still LMFAO when I watch that one.

Yes, Apollo 13 was a HUGE oversight on my part when listing Tom Hanks movies. A fantastic film! Althought, Road to Perdition was what I meant by "that one Jude Law one" that I hated. I predicted every "twist and turn" in that movie before they happened... which just made me hate it.

My favorite movie of all time is True Romance written by Tarentino and directed by Tony Scott. I can recite that movie from beginning to end... especially the Walken/Hopper scene.

True Romance is a cool movie. "You're part eggplant!" Hahahahahaha. And then, "Tell me, am I lying?"

"You're part cantaloupe."
