Rookie QB Stats

Rookie QB Stats

Postby Brett A. » Wed Dec 14, 2011 3:58 am

Because I am gripping frantically to the hope that Ponder is our quarterback of the future and that his hiccups are just part of being a rookie, I decided to do some research to compare his rookie stats thus far to those of other, reputable, legendary quarterbacks. Below is a table I put together of said rookie stats. Try and guess who is who... :D

I'll give you a hint: One of them is our rookie. ;)

After a few people try and guess who is who, I'll reveal identities.

Edit: I ended up hiding the G/GS (Games/Games Started) column as to not give any information away. Just know that most of the entries represent [almost] a full season (except for Ponder, obviously).

well as one know how many TD and INT ponder has it makes it easy to guess who he is :P

Well I would say ponder is 2 and I have no idea who the other guys are

It would be nice if you could give us the 8 others, just in a random order

The quarterbacks are (in no particular order):

Christian Ponder (who you've already correctly identified Malte)
Tom Brady
Terry Bradshaw
Warren Moon
John Elway
Fran Tarkenton
Joe Namath
Dan Marino
Johnny Unitas

Quite the list, huh?

Great post - thanks for the research. Good reason to cut Christian a little slack, huh?

I won't guess the list, but I find it incredible that any one of those guys had 6 TD's and 24 INT's in their first season, with a passing pct. of 38. Talk about a rookie who had to develop thick skin! Wow!

Brett, I AM wondering if Sck is Sacks and SckY is yards lost on Sacks. If so, how would someone lose 416 yards if they had 0 sacks? Must be something I'm missing. Also, is it really true that many of them went their full rookie year without a fumble, or was that stat not separated back in the good old days of the NFL?

Indeed it is a good reason to cut him some slack...

The 6/24 (TD/INT) is Terry Bradshaw. Must have been a tough Rookie year.

Yeah, I don't know about the 0 sacks but 416 sack yards... Doesn't quite make sense. I'll have to try and find Tarkenton's rookie year stats somewhere else... I imagine it's just a mistake. It seems, though, that they weren't tracking the 'fumbles' and 'fumbles lost' stats earlier in the league. You'll notice only Ponder and Brady have them.

I'm guessing that Fran's running ways saw him get more negative yardage than the average QB, and that they must have tracked negative yardage (or "sack yardage") before they tracked sacks. That's my guess.

Maybe they added some of Jim Marshalls "Runs" for TD'S?

I'm throwin' a flag on that comment, Fran. The penalty is for "Disrespect for a Legend". You'll be penalized one comment for that (but it did give me a chuckle!) Poor Jim, that's one that cannot be forgotten I guess.

Ok, I've served my penalty (I didn't comment on one of Ole's posts, I was laughing too hard anyway)
Jim Marshall is most assuredly a legend and one of my most favorite Vikings. Paul Krause is my #1 and for you young wippersnappers out there, here's a link to Viking History: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-high ... aul-Krause
