Inside Our War Room – Round 4

April 11, 2012, by Brett Anderson 15 comments

Alright, back to update you all again on our progress in the #MockThree online mock draft. I’ve touched on it a couple times already (so I won’t again here), but if you missed the first three rounds as well as the general background information on what the draft is all about, use the links below to catch up.

Round One

1.03 – LT Matt Kalil, USC
Trade – 2.03, 4.03 and 6.03 for Bengals 1.21
1.21 – CB Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama

Rounds Two & Three

3.03 – S Markelle Martin, Oklahoma State

After making the Markelle Martin selection at the top of the third, we again had to wait almost two full rounds to make another pick (as a result of the Dre Kirkpatrick trade). And again, it was tough to watch so many players we were targeting fly off the board.

Before making the Martin selection at the beginning of the third, I was pushing for us to take a wide receiver. Let me rephrase that: I was pushing for us to reach on a wide receiver. I had done a ton of scouting on various later-round wide receivers and was convinced that we should take a certain Juron Criner. I really liked Criner’s size and physicality. In watching his tape, he always seemed to come down with the ball and get up the field quickly. Criner fought for extra yardage after the catch and had good hand-eye coordination. I thought it would have been a solid pick as well as address a need that the team had. The GM of our War Room mellowed me out a little bit and told me it would be a reach; that Criner would probably still be there for our compensatory picks at the end of the fourth round. So, we took the safety Martin instead and crossed our fingers that we’d have another shot at Criner with our 4.33 pick.

Juron Criner was selected at 4.25, capping off a frantic run for wide receivers during the fourth.

We were all a little disappointed that Criner didn’t fall just a few picks further. We would have (meaning Josh, our GM, would have…) looked like geniuses! But, alas, we were left without Criner and going back to our board to see what other wide receivers were available that would still fit that ‘BPA’ title and be a good value.

I proposed we take a wide receiver who had fallen a little bit and was still, in my eyes, a great value pick at that point. Somebody who had the size, speed and verticality to stretch the field. Our GM proposed we take a different receiver, one who was a little further down on our board and, while still very promising, didn’t fit the role of a receiver who could be a legitimate threat down field.

So, here it is:

With the 33rd pick (compensatory) of the fourth round of the 2012 #MockThree NFL draft…

Merry Christmas To All

December 25, 2011, by Adam Warwas No comments yet

I just wanted to take a minute to wish all of my Vikings Territory friends a very Merry Christmas!

I hope Santa brings each of you what you have been wanting most this year, and that you all get to enjoy Christmas with your closest friends and family.

Be safe, have fun, and enjoy the holiday season!

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Veteran Tight Ends

December 24, 2011, by Adam Warwas No comments yet

At the beginning of the 2011 offseason, the Vikings new they had one year left before they would face a major crossroads with all of their veteran tight ends.

They started to address the issue by cutting long time utility man Jeff Dugan and drafting the best tight end prospect in the 2011 Draft, Kyle Rudolph.  There were even some rumors that the Vikings attempted, at one point, to agree to an extension with Visanthe Shiancoe but nothing ever came to fruition.

Now, with the 2011 season nearly over and Rudolph looking like a solid draft choice, the Vikings still have to figure out if Visanthe Shiancoe or Jim Kleinsasser figure into their plans moving forward, as both veterans are set to become unrestricted free agents.

The 31 year old Shiancoe had decent campaigns with the Vikings in 2008 and 2009, but has steadily been on the decline since then, partly due to nagging injuries.  Through thirteen weeks this season he has 36 catches for 409 yards and three touchdowns.  Shiancoe has started 11 games this season.  His career highs came in 2008 when he was good for 596 receiving yards and in 2009 when he caught 11 touchdowns.

Jimmy Kleinsasser, at age 34, may opt for retirement but that is a decision that has not been discussed with the media at all.  He very well could plan on playing for another five seasons.  Kleinsasser has pretty much been phased out of the passing game these days, with only one catch for four yards this season, but remains one of the best blocking tight ends in the NFL.  It is easily a factual statement to say that every offensive tackle the Vikings have had over the last 13 seasons have been made to look better than they were by the presence of Kleinsasser on the end of the line.

With both set to be free agents, and both getting up there in age, one could assume the Vikings will let them both leave with hopes of finding youthful talent to join Rudolph in the new generation of Vikings tight ends.

On the other hand, the Vikings already have so many needs as it is, adding tight end to the mix of free agency and draft needs could simply be too much.

So, armchair G.M.’s out there, I pose this question to you:

UPDATE:  I guess great minds think alike.  1500 ESPN literally just posted this article about Kleinsasser’s situation, and hinted that if the Vikings don’t offer him a contract he is likely to hang up his cleats for good.

No Live Chat On Xmas Eve

December 24, 2011, by Adam Warwas No comments yet

Live chats can be a lot of fun, even when the Vikings are playing terribly, but traffic tends to be very low on holidays such as tomorrow.

Thus, I have decided to forego a live chat for tomorrow’s game as most of you will doubtless be celebrating Christmas Eve with your family and friends.

So, we’ll aim to chat during the season ending game next week.

Have a very Merry Christmas everybody

Damage Done

December 24, 2011, by Adam Warwas No comments yet

The Vikings won Saturday’s matchup against the Redskins, which means little when measuring their success this season, but may end up defining the Vikings moving into the future.

Here is what we know right now:

  • The Vikings can no longer land the top pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.  It seems likely that they end up with the third pick next April, which is still a valuable spot to be drafting, but could end up keeping them out of the running for guys like quarterback Andrew Luck and offensive tackle Matt Kalil.
  • Last week, Adrian Peterson said he couldn’t explain why he only received 10 carries against the Saints.  This week, he got his explanation in the form of one of the toughest lessons he will ever learn.  DeJon Gomes hit the side of Peterson’s knee on his first carry of the second half and Peterson was left twitching on the ground, an image that is every fan’s worst nightmare.  Peterson will get an MRI on Saturday night and eventually we will get official word on the extent of the injury.  Leslie Frazier called the injury a “sprain” but it is hard to believe that more damage wasn’t done to the knee to anyone that saw the play.
  • It was unexpected that the main contributors to a Vikings victory would be Joe Webb, Toby Gerhart, Brandon Fusco, and Mistral Raymond but that is exactly what happened this week.  With regular starters Christian Ponder, Adrian Peterson, and Steve Hutchinson sidelined by injury the Vikings experienced an all-too-familiar boost of energy with Webb at the helm.  After Ponder experienced a concussion, Webb ran the ball five times for 34 yards and a touchdown.  More importantly, he was 4 of 5 in the passing game, throwing for 84 yards and two touchdowns.  His only mistake was a mental error on a third down option play that ended up going for negative yardage and giving the Redskins a chance to win the game.  It will be interesting to see how the Vikings handle their unpolished backup continuing to semi-prove himself for the second season in a row.  It will also be interesting to see if Webb will be the starter in their final game next week.
  • After being present for all 1,049 games in Vikings history, athletic trainer Fred Zamberletti missed his first game in 51 years due to health issues.  The 79 year-old trainer called Frazier prior to the game and asked him to deliver a special message to the team, saying they should “keep on fighting and just find a way to win.”

A Stroke Of Luck?

December 23, 2011, by Adam Warwas No comments yet

Well, this is getting interesting.

It has long been assumed that the Indianapolis Colts would be getting the first pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.  A Thursday night win against the Houston Texans, however, has given the Colts their second win of the year with only one more game left to play.

The Vikings and the Rams each also have two wins, but they each have two more opportunities to win (or lose (or tie)).

So, for those of you who consider a bad team to be a bad team regardless of their record, the silver lining could end up being in the position to select or trade away one of the highest rated college quarterback prospects in history.

For those fans wanting to see the Vikings end up drafting first overall, you should be cheering for three things:

  1.  The Colts to beat the Jaguars next week.
  2. The Vikings to lose to the Redskins this week and the Bears next week.
  3. The Rams to win one of their final two games.

At a time when Vikings football appears to have hit an all time low, the stakes in this “race” are surprisingly high.
