Links Of The Week: A Little Slow These Days

May 11, 2013, by Adam Warwas 4 comments

The news isn’t exactly hard to keep up with these days, because there isn’t much of it, but that didn’t stop us from digging up some good stuff to pass along this weekend:

  • The Vikings seem to have a thing for tall defensive backs these days.
  • A look at what undrafted quarterback James Vandenberg might bring to the #3 quarterback competition.
  • The Vikings finalized their agreement to play at TCF Bank Stadium and there are some interesting details regarding the situation.
  • Nick Reed may not have lasted long with the Vikings, but that hasn’t stopped him from having a bad ass career path.
  • A year after “experts” failed to give the Vikings a chance at the playoffs it appears they are now gaining some respect.
  • An old cohort of mine is now running Vikings Gab.  Congrats to Chris Boynton 0n his new gig.
  • A look at how the post-Draft depth chart is shaping up at the linebacker position.
  • Cris Carter has finally been voted into the Hall of Fame so we are now left to wonder who the next Viking to receive that honor will be.
  • Count Governor Mark Dayton as one of the clueless who think the Vikings weren’t justified, in terms of football reasons, to draft Chris Kluwe’s replacement.
  • Rick Spielman recently said Christian Ponder deserves as much credit as Adrian Peterson in the franchise making the playoffs last year.  Seriously.  He said that.  With word.  From his mouth.  And he wasn’t drunk.
  • The Vikings have 39 players on their roster right now that they drafted which ranks 7th in the NFL.
  • Linebacker Michael Mauti has a lengthy history of dealing with injury, but so does Vikings trainer Eric Sugarman.
  • The Vikings have started yet another community oriented campaign called “WE DAY.”
  • Rick Spielman is making it clear that he expects Ponder to make a big jump this season.
  • Vegas is not being kind to the Vikings when it comes to predicting their 2013 chances.
  • If the Vikings had their own “Mount Rushmore” who would you put on it?
  • And now, here it is, your moment of Zen:

Welcome To The Big Show: Cordarrelle Patterson

May 7, 2013, by Adam Warwas 27 comments

We continue to formally introduce you to our newest Vikings with our in-depth series.  If you missed the one on Sharrif Floyd then click here and you can click here for the article on Xavier Rhodes.

Up next is Tennessee wide out Cordarrelle Patterson who we identified as a possible Vikings target back in January.  Shortly after that article came about, Patterson began to skyrocket in terms of his perceived draft stock.  Despite growing concerns about his lack of experience, football intelligence, and general maturity, Patterson remained near the top of his class and was one of only three wide outs selected in the first round.

CORDARRELLE PATTERSON, WR, TENNESSEE

ATTRIBUTES

Height:                   6′ 2″

Weight:                  216 pounds

Arm Length:         31 3/4″

Hands:                   9″

COMBINE RESULTS

If Patterson’s game tape hadn’t caught the attention of NFL front offices, then his performance at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine should have done the trick.  Despite his size, Patterson was clocked as the sixth fastest wide out in the forty yard dash.  He also tied for the fifth highest vertical jump and the sixth longest broad jump.  As was expected to be the case, however, Patterson’s athleticism could not mask some inconsistencies in the positional drills.

Forty:                      4.42 seconds

Vertical Jump:      37″

Broad Jump:         128″

The Vikings were among the teams that met with Patterson at the Combine, and there are mixed reports about how well his interviews went, but we do know that he scored an “11″ on the Wonderlic test which has led to the “dumb” label being applied often and heavily by anyone with access to the internet.  Patterson, however refuses to accept that label and has a simple answer for why we shouldn’t be concerned about it.

“You can’t judge anything on the Wonderlic,” Patterson said plainly. “That has nothing to do with football.”

Keyshawn Johnson also scored an 11 on the Wonderlic, prior to being the #1 overall pick of the 1996 NFL Draft, and he came to Patterson’s defense prior to the Draft.

“If somebody is using the Wonderlic to determine if a player can play football, then the scouting department needs to be checked,” Johnson said.  ”…But I played 11 years, and was always accused of being one of the smartest players on the team.”

Links Of The Week: A Post-Draft Roundup

May 2, 2013, by Adam Warwas 19 comments

A week ago tonight, Vikings fans were eagerly awaiting the results of the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, and those results were indeed something to be excited about.  With the Draft now over, and with a little time to digest, let’s take a look around the web at what everyone is talking about now:

  • Bud Grant would have made a great broadcaster, but he turned it down because he wanted “some time off.”
  • With the “Triangle of Authority” in the rear view mirror Rick Spielman’s style is starting to win the fans over.
  • A 2,500 yard season and multiple Super Bowl rings are the lofty goals Adrian Peterson wants to reach.
  • Punter Chris Kluwe would prefer to be cut if there isn’t going to be a legitimate competition for the position.
  • Christian Ponder’s arm injury kept him out of his first playoff game, landed him in the E.R., and could be something to worry about moving forwards.
  • Spielman is winning over even the franchise’s toughest critics.
  • The Brian Urlacher chatter just will not die.
  • Both Chad Greenway and Greg Jennings are up for the same prestigious humanitarian award.
  • The media makes it seem like Cordarrelle Patterson can barely tie his own shoes.  I’m excited for him to prove them all wrong.
  • Christian Ponder knows that Matt Cassel represents at least some competition for the starting job.
  • Some clues have emerged about the Vikings stadium design which will be revealed this month.
  • The days of Bryant McKinnie’s annual weight watch is over for Vikings fans, but Matt Kalil is having the opposite problem.
  • Despite being a second year player, safety Harrison Smith plans on stepping up to fill the leadership role that Antoine Winfield held onto for so long in the Vikings secondary.
  • A photo gallery of Vikings minicamp.
  • If getting a punted football into the ceiling of a theatre is criteria for keeping a job, then Jeff Locke should be cut right now.
  • The Vikings continue to get plenty of high marks for their 2013 Draft class.
  • Matt Cassel says he taught Tom Brady everything he knows.  The guy has a good sense of humor.
  • Jared Allen is feeling healthy, isn’t worried about his contract, and has his sights set on the Super Bowl this year.
  • A look at how the Draft impacted the landscape of the NFC North.
  • And, here it is, your moment of Zen:

Welcome To The Big Show: Xavier Rhodes

April 28, 2013, by Adam Warwas 2 comments

We continue to formally introduce you to our newest Vikings with our in-depth series.  If you missed the one on Sharrif Floyd then click here to read all about our new defensive tackle.

Up next is someone we had identified as a possible Vikings target months ago.  Florida State cornerback Xavier Rhodes did indeed end up being the Vikings second selection in 2013.

XAVIER RHODES, CB, FLORIDA STATE

ATTRIBUTES

Height:  6′ 1″

Weight:  210 pounds

Arm Length:  33 3/4″

Hand Size:  9″

COMBINE RESULTS

Rhodes tested very well at the NFL’s Scouting Combine, but he did struggle in the positional skills, which is something you don’t see discussed in the media as much the forty times and bench press numbers.  Despite his big frame he ran the 11th fastest forty yard dash of all the defensive backs at the event.  Both his broad jump and vertical jump tied for the best at in Indy, while his bench press totals were adequately average.

Forty:  4.43 seconds

Bench:  14 reps

Vertical:  40.5″

Broad Jump:  132″

PRO DAY RESULTS

Rhodes did not partake in any timed drills at the Florida State Pro Day, but scouts came away still impressed with the speed and quickness they saw from him at both events.  Still, reviews from his Pro Day were in consensus regarding how the big corner can have trouble with changing direction quickly and how tight he can be in the hips.  A lot of reports preceding the draft indicated that this event confirmed his inability to succeed in zone coverage, which has to be at least a little concerning to Vikings fans.

Tracking The UDFA Rumors

April 27, 2013, by Adam Warwas 27 comments

The Vikings, like every other NFL team, are now racing to fill out their rosters with undrafted free agents.  Here are the players we are hearing the Vikings have agreed to terms with:

  • Colin Anderson, TE, Furman
  • Brandan Bishop, FS, North Carolina State
  • Joe Bonadies, OL, Penn
  • Duran Carter, WR, Alabama
  • Nicolas Edwards, WR, Eastern Washington
  • Darius Eubanks, FS, Georgia Southern
  • Erik Highsmith, WR, North Carolina
  • Zach Line, RB/FB, SMU
  • Marquis Jackson, DE, Portland State
  • Anthony McCloud, DT, Florida State
  • Robbie Rouse, RB, Fresno State
  • Rayon Simmons, RB, Winona State
  • Rodney Smith, WR, Florida State
  • Collins Ukwu, DE, Kentucky
  • James Vandenberg, QB, Iowa
  • Camden Wentz, C, North Carolina State
  • Jamaal White, SS, Northwestern State
  • Jerodia Williams, RB, Furman
  • Nathan Williams, LB, Ohio State

It is important to keep in mind that these are all unofficial until the team confirms their signings.  Check back, we’ll be updating as the rumors start to fly.

Welcome To The Big Show: Sharrif Floyd

April 26, 2013, by Adam Warwas 3 comments

With three first round picks already in the fold, and another two days of the Draft left to play out, I am dusting of the ol’ “Welcome To The Big Show” feature which will detail each of our selections.

SHARRIF FLOYD, DT, FLORIDA

Attributes

Floyd possesses a great mix of size and athleticism which will help him continue to be a versatile player as his career moves to the next level.  He possesses a nice arsenal of pass rush moves and a very quick first step that could help the Vikings move the pocket against opposing offenses.

Height:  6’3″

Weight:  297 pounds

Arm Length:  31 3/4″

Hand Size:  10 1/8″

Combine Results

Forty:  4.92 seconds

Vertical Jump:  30″

Broad Jump:  106″

3-Cone:  7.40 seconds

20-Yard Shuttle:  4.75 seconds

Pro Day Results

Floyd reportedly “tweaked” his ankle at the NFL’s Scouting Combine and he did not participate in Florida’s March 12th Pro Day.  Ten days later he drew representatives from 14 NFL teams to a rescheduled workout where he put on an impressive display.  Floyd chose to stand on his Combine numbers in regards to the timed drills, but he impressed onlookers by going through drill after drill with a certain tenaciousness.

“I wasn’t going to stop until he told me to stop,” Floyd said of the position drills. “I wasn’t going to say, ‘I’m done.’”

Floyd’s pro day was one of many positive steps in his pre-Draft regimen that had analysts believing he was a top-five prospect.

Manti Te’o Speculation Hits Full Force

April 25, 2013, by Adam Warwas 5 comments

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network set the rumormill on fire this morning when he indicated that the Chicago bears like linebacker Manti Te’o so much that the Vikings will have to leapfrog them in the first round if they really covet him, and then Rapoport said that’s what the Vikings plan on doing.

Now, we haven’t seen a whole ton of “smoke” coming out of Winter Park leading up to the Draft thus far, but I have a feeling that some games are being played here and Rapoport is simply a pawn.

We’ve been saying all offseason that Manti Te’o makes sense for the Vikings, and the Vikings make even more sense for Manti Te’o, but I am not sure this is the type of year the Vikings should be sacrificing multiple picks to trade upwards in the first round.  This wouldn’t be the first time these two teams have engaged in some gamesmanship this offseason, as evidenced by the inflated contract Phil Loadholt signed during the opening days of free agency.

We’re only a few hours from speculation becoming reality (or fiction), but the Manti Te’o situation is certainly the one to keep a close eye on as the evening progresses.
