(Late) Links Of The Week: Rams Up Next

December 15, 2012, by Adam Warwas 1 comment

I’m a little late getting this week’s Links segment kicked out to you all, but there are still plenty of great articles to point you towards as you wait for tomorrow’s kickoff.  Read them, tell the author what you think, and tell them who sent you:

  • The Vikings passing offense is going to be a main sticking point in almost every game preview from here on out.
  • Allen the Entertainer went on Jim Rome’s new show and had quite the fun time blasting recent changes to the game of football.
  • When building this Vikings team the front office has to be aware that they will most likely be playing their home games outdoors for two years.
  • Anyone that still clings to the idea that the NFL is not a quarterback driven league need not look much further than the 2012 Minnesota Vikings.
  • Here is a dream that just seems incredibly too pleasant to ever come true.
  • Chris Kluwe got fined for his uniform infraction on Sunday, and his special teams coach has just about had it with his punter.
  • I found a Bill Musgrave supporter!  Take that Sasquatch hunters!
  • Todd McShay put down the self-tanner long enough to release his first mock draft and he has the Vikings using their pick on a defensive tackle with the last name “Williams.”  That has worked well for us in the past.
  • A.J. Jefferson’s concussion last Sunday shouldn’t hold him out this week, but he was plenty scared following the injury.
  • Scroll down past the game recap (unless you want to read it, of course) to the table that compares Christian Ponder to Tarvaris Jackson.  Then, drink heavily.
  • Bill Musgrave says that Christian Ponder’s footwork “needs to be more refined.”  He also contends that books have pages and that cows say “moo.”
  • Leslie Frazier has told defensive end D’Aundre Reed, who hasn’t been active for two weeks, to be patient.
  • The question of whether or not Minnesota can afford their new Vikings stadium is not yet answered, and won’t be for a long time.
  • How this offseason goes for free agents Dwight Freeney and Osi Umeniyora could tell us a lot about Jared Allen’s potential future, or lack thereof, in Minnesota.
  • Some really fun conceptual pictures of the future stadium in Mineapolis.
  • Jerome Felton has been a very solid fullback paving the way for Adrian Peterson, but rookie Rhett Ellison might be even better in that area.
  • Everson Griffen avoided a fine for his hit high on Jay Cutler last week.
  • Bryant McKinnie used to look like an All Pro against lesser talents while looking like a clown against the better pass rushers in the NFL.  Rookie Matt Kalil, however, looks like an All Pro no matter who lines up across from him.
  • A lot weird things can happen on any given Sunday, but Vikes Geek points out three things that he considers to be ludicrous from last week.
  • Rookies Harrison Smith and Josh Robinson have proved to be just what the doctor ordered for an annually disappointing Vikings secondary.
  • Don’t click this link unless you are prepared to buy yourself the greatest Christmas present ever.

the Tombion: All the satire, none of the originality.

December 7, 2012, by Adam Warwas 5 comments

[Editor's Note:  They say laughter is the best medicine.  That is why I didn't flinch at the idea of faithful reader "Tomb" contributing some weekend laughs from time to time here on the pages of Vikings Territory.  This recurring (if you like it) segment will bring you satirical headlines from around the NFL and run under the title “the Tombion” which is an obvious rip off of…”

Brow vs. Brow: Bert Files Suit Against Flacco

BALTIMORE–Appearing before a small but energetic throng of reporters at an impromptu press conference to defend recent litigation filed by his attorneys against Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, Bert, of Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie, was at times calm and rational, at times highly combative, sometimes even waxing oddly nostalgic, but always relaying an unflinching confidence in his decision. Bert’s petition insists that Joe Flacco knowingly and willingly infringed on Bert’s trademark unibrow to further his personal career ambitions.

“This is a clear trademark violation,” Bert insisted. “Do you have any idea how many years I’ve been rockin’ this eyebar? I’ve spent most of my life, maybe most of my soul to make this thing part of the American fabric. I’ve put in the time. I didn’t do it to have some poseur accelerate his own position by ripping me off. I mean, come on! The Ravens have a defense and Ray Rice. That’s it. Flacco shamelessly rides their talents and pretends he’s actually a quarterback to be taken seriously? Like the team would fall apart without his constant lack of clutch playmaking? If he’s an elite quarterback, then Vanilla Ice is a musical genius. Think about it, 4th & 29, just under 2 minutes to go, and what does Flacco do? A dump pass to your running back? Seriously? Real ‘Brady-like’ performance there, Joe. Rice puts the team on his back; against all odds he converts the 4th, and Flacco has the audacity to celebrate like he had anything to do with it? This turd needs to be flushed, and I’m just the man to do the flushing. You can quote me on that!”

Meanwhile, from team headquarters, Joe Flacco issued a more solemn, but nonetheless shocking prepared address.

“Bert’s accusations are frivolous. I’m confident that true justice will ultimately prevail, and the American judicial system will agree with me that these are baseless accusations. It makes no sense. The facts are clear, I stand before you as the starting quarterback for an NFL team, I make millions of dollars doing so, and I’ve never even been to second base with anyone. My marriage? A sham. She won’t let me touch her. Our child? Not mine. I have no idea whose kid that is. I have zero doubt this caterpillar on my forehead has contributed to my frustrations and ultimate personal failings. Why would I willingly do that to myself? Again, it makes no sense, much like his case.”

Bert’s domestic partner, Ernie, declined comment.

Weekend Answers To Your Questions

November 30, 2012, by Adam Warwas 2 comments

Once again, I solicited questions from you guys and spent some time thinking about the answers.  Here are the results:

Adam, to what degree do you think poor offensive line play and a weak receiving corps are having on the performance of Christian Ponder?

Football is a team sport, no doubt about it.  The thing is, however, that football is a unique team sport in that one position is far and away more important than all of the rest.  Argue all you want, but quarterbacks make and break football teams in the modern day NFL.

Now, I’m not making excuses for the receivers dropping the football or for failings in pass protection, but Christian Ponder has to embrace the leadership role he is lucky enough to have before he flat out loses it.  He has to gather the troops, make clear his expectations, lead by example and demand more of himself with every lesson learned.

I think, especially with Harvin sidelined, Ponder has indeed drawn the short straw when it comes to receiver talent.  However, that offensive line is better than people are giving credit for, and if he stopped imagining non-existent pressure causing him to flee the pocket (and, thus, creating pressure by changing directions) I think the line holds up better than most realize.

Also, apologists can make all of the excuses they want for Ponder, but he has the best running back in football right now making life a heck of a lot easier on him than it could be.

Links Of The Bye Week

November 15, 2012, by Adam Warwas 12 comments

Coming off of a big win, the Vikings bye week has not been completely quiet, and I have plenty of great reads to share with you:

  • Our friends at TC Huddle recently had a sit-down with Chad Greenway.  I’ve listed this one first for a reason… read it!
  • Governor Mark Dayton has some strong opinions about PSL’s, but some believe his threats are completely empty.
  • The Vikings are the last NFC North team to have their bye week, but they are still the least penalized within the division.
  • Is Adrian Peterson in the middle of his best NFL season?
  • Ok, read what I wrote three weeks ago… then read this letter from a concerned dad.  I don’t think him and I see eye to eye.  Sorry, Dad.
  • Chris Kluwe’s transformation into a celebrity just never seems to end.
  • Rick Spielman talked a lot about a lot of subjects during the bye week.
  • The Vikings aren’t playing this week, but here are some ideas for who to cheer for (or against) this weekend.
  • On this list, putting Percy Harvin in the “Other” category is simply stupid.
  • Want to know more about Christian Ponder’s gal?  Of course you do.
  • Against the Lions Kyle Rudolph shined while Harrison Smith struggled.
  • Former Viking Ray Edwards is no longer a wanted man.
  • Gil takes a close look at a 2013 prospect that could very well end up a Viking next year.
  • Adrian Peterson and Peyton Manning are two obvious choices for Comeback Player of the Year.
  • Some people are sold on Christian Ponder, while some aren’t.
  • For being a rebuilding team, the Vikings sure do have a lot of elite players.

Answering Questions From The Floor

November 10, 2012, by Adam Warwas 6 comments

Yesterday, mainly out of boredom, I solicited questions from the readers and promised to answer as many as possible.  So, for whatever the answers might be worth, here we go:

Who’s the MVP of the season so far?

Adam Says:  Starting me off with an easy one, sweet!  Percy Harvin has been incredible this season.  62 catches for 677 yards three touchdowns.  22 rushing attempts for 96 yards and a touchdown.  Averaging 35.9 yards on 16 kick returns and a touchdown.  The guy has been elite in every sense of the word.  Watching guys like Larry Fitzgerald struggle with poor quarterback play, it makes Harvin’s production even more impressive considering the current state of the offense.

Geesh, Imagine What The Bye Week Will Be Like

October 19, 2012, by Adam Warwas 8 comments

A half game out of first place.  An intense battle with Larry Fitzgerald and Patrick Peterson coming up.  A need to rebound following a disappointing loss to Washington.  A team in need of some serious progression this season.

The work week must be intense at Winter Park this week, right?  Well, probably, but there is also an abundance of TMZ-type stories going on with these Vikings and I thought we’d better just get them out there in the open here at VT, even though I would rather just avoid them.

Links of the Week: Rebound Edition

October 19, 2012, by Brett Anderson 6 comments

What is that you say? There wasn’t enough coverage of the Vikings here on VT alone? Well, we have just the thing for everyone out there who just can’t get enough purple – our favorite links of the week:

  • Exactly how valuable is Blair Walsh to the Vikings? Our friends at The Vikings Age assess the young kickers value.
  • Bill Musgrave told reporters that he wasn’t proud of their red zone ‘plan’ last week against the Redskins. Neither were we, Bill. Neither were we…
  • Last week’s loss to the Redskins dropped the Vikings in their power rankings. Not as much as you may think, though. Multiple NFL.com ‘experts’ still have the Vikings listed right inside the top-10.
  • “The Vikes have to win this game,” says Pascifist Viking in the KAB preview of this weekend’s match up against Arizona.
  • The Vikings Gab has the low down on Vikings/Cardinals injuries.
  • Have you guys seen the Vikings Weekly Game Posters ESPN 1500 has been making every week? They’re pretty darn awesome. Check this week’s out at the bottom of this post and then go see the rest of them.
  • It’s never too soon to start thinking about the draft, right? The Daily Norseman takes another look at which college players could be future Vikings. Do Jesse Williams or Quinton Patton ring any bells?
  • The Viking Age gets a twofer this week… Is it too soon to say John Carlson was a complete bust? They sure don’t think so.
  • Kluwe’s going to debate a chair, so that’s fun.
  • A.J. Jefferson, the ex-Cardinals quarterback the Vikings traded for early September, wants to stick it to his old team this week. How is he going to do that? By spilling the beans to Vikings coaching staff.
  • Should Chris Cook be blowing receivers up at the line more often? Tom Pelissero with ESPN 1500 has a great write up on why the Vikings haven’t been having the over-sized corner play close to the line.
  • Adam pointed out yesterday that it wouldn’t be inconceivable for the Vikings to target receiver Dwayne Bowe if they win their next two games. Apparently he’s not the only one.
  • Another one from Rant Sports: Our buddy Gil has a fun article listing the most annoying player on each team in the NFL. I bet you can guess who he chose from the Ravens. Can you guess who he chose from the Vikings, though?
