In only four days the Vikings roster will be cut down from 88 players to 53. By 3pm (CST) on Saturday the regular season squad, along with a 10-man practice squad, will be assembled. The team began trimming the fat on Tuesday, releasing cornerback Bene Benwikere and wide receiver Jordan Taylor. The Minnesota Vikings on Monday removed cornerback Mike Hughes from the physically unable to perform list. It’s the first step in Hughes returning to game action. Hughes tore his ACL and also suffered ligament damage to his knee in a game last September. Now, he’s cleared to return to practice.
Mike Zimmer began Tuesday’s press conference by providing some thoughts on the Vikings’ preseason win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night. Zimmer said penalties were much better, which was a point of emphasis after the team committed 13 penalties in the first preseason game, and he also thought the defense tackled better. So with Treadwell’s future in Minnesota all but decided, the team is apparently looking to recoup whatever assets it can for the former first-rounder.
After a weekend in which the Vikings shook up their special teams personnel by acquiring kicker/punter Kaare Vedvik and releasing long snapper Kevin McDermott, placekicker Dan Bailey had his first perfect day of training camp.

Early on in training camp, Mike Zimmer said that quarterbacks coach Klint Kubiak was working with Cousins on “instinctively creating space” within the pocket. Zimmer noted that when opposing defenses double-team receivers Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs, no one is left to “cover” the quarterback. So, in order to counter the blanket coverage being applied to the duo, something had to be done.
