[Note: this is the first part of a series we will be doing here at Vikings Territory where we take a closer look at the individual free agents the Vikings could be targeting this offseason. Make sure to check back in the future for more free agents!]
There is no debate that one of the Vikings biggest areas of need this offseason is defensive secondary – specifically the position of cornerback. It is also no secret that Cortland Finnegan, one of the stronger cornerbacks in the league, does not think he will be back in Tennessee to play for the Titans next season. So, naturally, Finnegan has become one of the more popular choices amongst Vikings fans as someone who could be picked up and immediately fill a position of need.
Continue reading for our in-depth look at Cortland Finnegan.
On a silly little side note (hey, Vikings news is pretty slow right now), yesterday via Twitter, Adrian Peterson announced, “So I’m thinking about changing my number! #28 has been good to me, but I think its time [to] switch it up!” Peterson then went further to think aloud, “I was thinking 21 or 23!”
No one is quite sure what sparked Peterson to come out and say such a silly thing. Maybe rehab has him going stir crazy… Regardless, Peterson immediately received tons of responses from fans exclaiming that he should definitely not change his number (not that the Vikings or the NFL would allow such a thing considering #28 is definitely the Vikings best selling jersey).
Personally, if Peterson, for some ridiculous reason, did happen to change his number, I think it would definitely have to be #24. What better number for someone who is known as “All-Day?”
A few weeks into the offseason, the Vikings are done making personnel changes after hiring Alan Williams as defensive coordinator and Brendan Daly as the defensive line coach. Before I jump into more details about the two new Vikings coaches (although, one of them was previously a Vikings coach in 2006-08), below is a quick recap of the few changes that were made to personnel.
The Alan Williams and the Brendan Daly signings should be no surprise as the Vikings, for the longest time, are apparently only capable of hiring friends.
Alan Williams was previously the Colts defensive backs coach for 10 years. For two of those years, Leslie Frazier worked with Williams (including the Colts team that won the Super Bowl in 2006-07).
Williams will have his work cut out for him as the Vikings tote one of the NFL’s worst pass defenses. Hopefully, with the addition of a long-time defensive backs coach, the Vikings depleted secondary will receive some attention this offseason and can come back as a stronger unit in 2012. The hiring of Williams ensures that the Vikings will remain a 4-3, Tampa-2 style defense as that is what Williams ran with the Colts.
Brendan Daly, who was an assistant defensive line coach for the Vikings from 2006-08, was hired back to replace Dunbar as the defensive line coach. He comes from being the defensive line coach with St. Louis Rams from 2009-11. It should be noted that Daly was with the Vikings as an assistant defensive line coach during a stretch of time where they were the NFL’s best run defense.

Thought I’d let you all know that my mock draft has been updated and features significant changes. Click the button below to head on over and check out how I have things panning out this time around. Would love to get everyone’s feedback and hear their ideas on who will end up where come April.
When Adam and I set out to completely redesign Vikings Territory, one of my personal goals was to bring it up to date with a lot of the technologies out there today – specifically social media. While I know some of you are hesitant to buy in, so to speak, into “that Twitter thing,” its importance in today’s society can’t be denied. Furthermore, the role it plays in sports is something that I felt we could kind of harbor here to bring you guys the most up to date news about our Vikings.
One of the most direct ways to find out what is going on with the team is to go directly to the source… the team itself. I’ve been following most of the Vikings players on Twitter for a while. While I would see something that Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin, etc… would ‘tweet’ occasionally, there was really no place to see what all of the Vikings were saying at once in one, neatly organized way. Enter the “Vikings Territory Tweet GRIDiron.”
What we’ve done for you all is put together a page where you can go to see the three most recent tweets of every Vikings player (that is currently on Twitter). While, most of the time, there really isn’t anything incredibly informative the guys are saying, it can be entertaining. For example, I used the Tweet GRIDiron last night and noticed that our favorite wide receiver, Percy Harvin, was enjoying some moonshine for the first time. You could also see that most of the guys were watching the divisional playoffs and get their inside perspective of the games. Visanthe Shiancoe and Kyle Rudolph both admired the importance of the tight ends in the New England/Denver game while Kluwe choose to mess with Tim Tebow instead.
So, go on over and check it out. You can click this link, or you can just click the [fancy!] image above.
Alright folks, here it is: my first 2012 mock draft of the offseason! I take a look at each pick in the first round, predict trades, who teams will take and then offer my opinion/analysis/thoughts on the acquisition. Some of you may be surprised with how I have things panning out for the Vikings.
I would love to have everyone’s thoughts/comments/criticisms/etc… on what I’ve put together (comments are enabled at the end of the mock). Click the link below to check it out and enjoy!
