Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator George Edwards will interview for the Chicago Bears head coaching position.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported the Bears have requested an interview with Vikings Defensive Coordinator George Edwards. Edwards is in his fourth season as the Vikings Defensive Coordinator. Edwards has also held the same position in Washington (2003) and Buffalo (2010-2011) per the team’s website. The 2017 season is Edwards’ 20th as a coach in the NFL.

The Vikings defense finished as the best in the NFL during the regular season.

Minnesota’s defense has improved every year since Edwards joined the team in 2014. Under then first-year head coach Mike Zimmer, the Vikings ranked 14th in total defense. In 2015 the unit rose to 13th. Last season the defense finished as the third-best in the NFL.

Edwards, 50, will be the Vikings second coordinator to be interviewed by the Bears. Pat Shurmur is also scheduled to visit with Chicago this week.

The Bears fired head coach John Fox on “Black Monday” after three consecutive seasons in the cellar of the NFC North.

As Rapaport noted, this will be Edwards’ first head coach interview. Edwards, who played linebacker at Duke, has never been a head coach according to Wikipedia. The North Carolina native earned his first coaching job as an assistant at Florida.

Edwards’ contract with the Vikings expires after the season.
