Dear Fellow Vikings Fans,
From the day I started writing about the Minnesota Vikings I often field the question “why do you spend your time on that?” It was an answer that was hard to find, to be honest. I’m lucky enough to have a demanding career that has nothing to do with this website, I’m a lucky husband, and I’m a father of three beautiful children… Time is precious for me and there is only so much of it.
So… why do I do it?
I’m not sure that I have yet to find a comprehensive answer to that yet, to be perfectly honest. I enjoy the bond I share with many of our readers, particularly the”old gang” that has been here since the start. I love that I’ve surrounded myself with enough incredibly talented (and awesome) teammates that this thing continues to reach new successes. And, of course, I love my Minnesota Vikings and really look forward to the day when Vikings Territory gets to publish that article that is celebrating their first Super Bowl victory.
All of that stuff combined makes every day running this site an absolute honor, but my favorite time of each year (a close second to the NFL Draft) is when we try to use our little corner of the internet to do a bit of good.
The tradition is long-running, at this point, but last year we raised the bar with our annual promoting of worthy causes when we coined the #MoreThanWords campaign name, invited some other Vikings communities to join in, and teamed up with Chad Greenway’s Lead The Way Foundation in what amounted to about $5,000 in donations being raised towards the “Chad’s Locker” program benefiting those saddled with a reality that involves long-term hospital stays.
The effort also resulted in dozens of positive articles about the genuinely generous efforts to help those in need that Greenway has undertaken since his arrival in Minnesota. That might not sound like a big deal, but trust me when I say it is far easier for sites like this one to write controversial and critical pieces while forgetting to hit the “pause” button and focus on the good stuff from time to time.
Leading by example is Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer. When he announced earlier this year that he was re-launching The Mike Zimmer Foundation in Minnesota, I immediately received a number of comments from our team saying that he was the obvious choice for the 2016 version of #MoreThanWords.
Who am I to argue?
Coach Zimmer, and the Foundation’s director Corri Zimmer, have expressed great excitement that we have chosen them as the beneficiaries of this year’s campaign. The have been kind enough to supply us with a bevy of ridiculously awesome giveaway prizes to assist the efforts and I encourage you to read all of the details right here on our dedicated #MoreThanWords page. You won’t want to miss out on this!
We know this isn’t all about the prizes, though.
“The Vikings family is so wonderful!” was the first thing Corri Zimmer told me after I pitched the idea to them.
Indeed they are, Corri. Indeed they are.
And now it is time to prove it!
Please consider making a donation to the #MoreThanWords campaign, checking in with all participating sites for frequent updates, and visiting the Foundation’s official web page to learn about the great mission they’ve brought to Minnesota.
