According to Tom Pelissero, the Vikings have selected a new head team physician in Dr. Chris Larson.

Larson is associated with Twin Cities Orthopedics, as are additional new hires Dr. Chris Coetzee and Dr. Greg Lervick. Pelissero reported that the Vikings’ previous contract with Tria Orthopedics expired, and the team has now decided to transition to the new brand.

It seems Minnesota is intentionally employing specialists, as each of the three additions focus on a specific area. Coetzee works with foot/ankle, and Lervick’s focus is shoulder/elbow. Larson is well-established as one of the nation’s leading hip surgeons, and he also specializes in knees.

It’s interesting to note that Larson has already spent time with the Vikings, as he worked on staff from 2007-2011 before joining Twin Cities Orthopedics full time.

Larson did not directly work with Adrian Peterson following his ACL tear and subsequent recovery, but he worked with Peterson prior to the injury and did comment on the running back’s goals and progress during that time.

“I think it’s fairly unique at this high level of sport,” said Dr. Larson in 2012. “It’s not like we’ve never seen this before. But he’s certainly been ahead of the curve all along.”

Having such an experienced and renowned physician, especially one that is already familiar with the organization and some of the current players, will certainly be an asset to the Vikings moving forward and will add that mental reassurance in dealing with any significant injuries.

Pelissero also reported that Dr. Sheldon Burns and Dr. David Olson, already with the Vikings, will remain on staff as team physicians.
