The Other Guys: Favre Return, Brandon Flowers, and Chicago Battle

I could have swore the Winter Olympics just ended, but it must have been two years ago because the internet is telling me to care about soccer, and that is only supposed to happen every four years during the Summer Games, right?

If you are like me, however, and would much rather nerd out on the NFL offseason than watch one single minute of soccer, then I’m here to help you out.  Our Monday look around the NFC North for this week:

GREEN BAY PACKERS

I never liked Brett Favre playing for the Vikings, which is well documented by some of my earliest work, because I felt that he would always be a Green Bay Packer.  Nix that, I thought he was the Green Bay Packer… posing as a Viking.  As expected, time will prove this to be absolutely true and history will greatly favor his 16 year career with the Packers over his stints with the Falcons, Jets or even the Vikings.  The Packers and Favre have apparently been improving their relations and the future Hall of Famer says he would soon like to make his return trip to the land of cheddar.  The Packers have made it clear that they would like to retire Favre’s jersey number prior to his (super likely) Hall of Fame induction in 2016.

DETROIT LIONS

The Vikings are one of about 10 teams linked to free agent cornerback Brandon Flowers.  The Kansas City Chiefs released the Pro Bowler Friday and has added a little free agency drama to an otherwise ho-hum offseason week.  Another NFC North team that could clearly use an upgrade at cornerback are the Detroit Lions who are so historically bad at the position that they actually make Vikings fans feel better about our own constant struggles in the secondary.  Flowers may not be an answer in Detroit, however, and the reasoning being his struggles with press coverage should also be cause for concern for Mike Zimmer’s Vikings, as well.  Both NFC North teams have checked in with the Flowers camp, but that only seems fitting for such a prominent name, and we’ll continue to track the updates for anything substantial.

CHICAGO BEARS

Whenever a franchise player departs a team it seems to take forever before they can stabilize the position once again, no matter how hard they try to plan ahead.  The Bears had the luxury of putting Brian Urlacher in the middle of their defense for a long, long time and replacing him hasn’t been a seamless transition.  That doesn’t mean there isn’t talent competing for the spot, though, two years later.  One of the best position battles to watch in Chicago this preseason will be between veteran D.J. Williams and second-year player Jon Bostic.  The Bears may end up having to chose between the veteran presence Williams brings to the table and the exciting upside that Bostic has been flashing in OTA’s.
