Vikings First Depth Chart Has Few Surprises

The Vikings first depth chart of the 2013 season, released yesterday at Vikings.com, features few surprises and is pretty much what most expected.

Jacob Lacey has moved ahead of Marcus Sherels at the LCB spot. Brandon Burton also looks to be ahead of Sherels at cornerback. Although Sherels is listed as the first Punt Returner, it will be interesting to see where he ends up. It’s not likely the Vikings keep seven cornerbacks on the roster and I doubt they will keep him on solely as a punt returner considering the talent we have in Jarius Wright, Josh Robinson and Cordarrelle Patterson.
Speaking of Cordarrelle Patterson, he shows up as the number one Kick Returner. Not surprising considering the athleticism and big-play-ability he has shown thus far in his short time with the Vikings. At receiver though, Patterson is behind Jerome Simpson. It’s likely that Simpson and big, free-agent signing Greg Jennings will bookend while Patterson will be free to do work in the middle of the field and in the backfield.
Joe Webb and Stephen Burton are still fighting for that fifth spot while Greg Childs finds himself at the very bottom of the depth chart at his position.
One of the few surprises, depending on who you are, is that ex-Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop finds himself behind Marvin Mitchell. It is likely that Bishop is still getting acclimated to the 4-3 system, coming from a 3-4, and will likely move ahead of Marvin Mitchell in the next couple of weeks. It could also be that Bishop has been dealing with an injury and is not quite 100% yet.
DeMarcus Love finds himself at the bottom of the left tackle position which can likely be attributed to his recent 4-game suspension for using PEDs.
Though the word from camp is that halfback Bradley Randle from UNLV has been impressive, he still finds himself behind Matt Asiata and Joe Banyard at his position. Randle will have to continue to impress and put on a good show in preseason games in order to move his way up the depth chart and make the team.
There aren’t really any other surprises on the first depth chart of the 2013 season. And, while I expect there to be some minor shifts, this is likely to be pretty close to what the depth chart is heading into the regular season.
