2013 NFL Mock Draft (Brett’s)

v3.0 (Final) / Posted by Brett Anderson / Last updated April 22, 2013

A little about this mock draft:

  • The approach I took was generally looking at what each teams’ predominant needs were while keeping in mind the best player available.
  • The board I used when making this draft is our very own, Vikings Territory Big Board which ranks 229 prospects.
  • This will be the final mock draft for 2013 so hopefully I’ll hit on a number of selections (not likely…).

So, with that said, enjoy the mock draft below! Would love to hear your opinions, criticisms, [praise!], etc… in the comments.

Also, make sure to check out the below links for tons of other great mock drafts.

Not bad! But I think I would select Kevin Mintor at 23 and move up in the second round to get a WR if Patterson and Keenan Allen are off the board.

Johnathan Banks says Quinton Patton is the best WR he has played against.

Justin Hunter, DeAndre Hopkins, Quinton Patton, Da Rick Rodger, Robert Woods or even Terrence Williams could all be available in round 2 at some point.

    • Brett Anderson January 20, 2013, 11:08 am Reply

I think Kevin Minter looks pretty good. Wouldn’t be upset with that pick.

    • Brett Anderson January 21, 2013, 8:13 pm Reply

Thanks, Carl. Yeah, it’s a tough spot. I could definitely see us (maybe prefer us…?) taking a DT/LB/CB in the first and finding a WR in the second.

  2. Malte January 20, 2013, 4:55 am Reply

surprising to see so many Wideouts going in the first round.. There isn’t realy a big difference in this years top 3 to the number 5-10 guys, that perhaps why I want us to draft a wideout in the 2nd round (unless the crew falls in love with a guy). I think we should be looking at LB / DT / CB in the first round

    • Brett Anderson January 21, 2013, 8:13 pm Reply

Teams are historically willing to reach on players they think can provide them with a spark on offense.

  3. Skol12 January 20, 2013, 3:55 pm Reply

I wouldn’t be happy at all if this is how our draft went. First off terrance Williams is awful I wouldn’t mind him in the 3rd round but no way in the first. I don’t want Any wr in the first really because i don’t see any better than the 2nd/3rd rounders.
Second, why its kawann short on your list of Vikings picks? The guy will be way over matched in the NFL, i want Hankins, Jesse Williams, our Ogletree at 23 noone else.
There is a lot more i could add but I’ll wait till closer to the draft.

    • Brett Anderson January 21, 2013, 8:14 pm Reply

Sorry you’re disappointed, Skol! Love your opinions and analysis, though.

What makes you say Williams is awful?
Why will Kawann Short be overmatched?

      • Dan T January 23, 2013, 12:19 pm Reply

I’m also curious about the hating on Short. The guy played well against big ten O-lines throughout his career and is currently tearing things up at the Sr. Bowl practices.

        • Malte January 23, 2013, 12:26 pm Reply

agree 100 % he is having a blast down there

        • Skol12 January 23, 2013, 8:58 pm Reply

I just can’t stop seeing him as another Dontari Poe at best. Call it a gut feeling.

      • Skol12 January 23, 2013, 8:55 pm Reply

When it comes to Short I see him as a Ballard level player(different styles but similar career paths). I wouldn’t mind Short in the 4th round but he hasn’t earned the right to go in the first round. When i watched Short play he just didn’t look like he had the drive, too complacent and i think tougher guys in the NFL will rattle him.
As for Williams, he is awful as a top 25 pick i should clarify, he doesn’t have the talent or ceiling to be drafted at #23. He reminds me of AJ Jenkins in San Fran. I am very hard on grading some positions, Wr and DT are my hardest along with DE.

Didn’t mean to be so hard on your picks, we were pretty close last year (you even talked me into wanting Wright). This year with first rounders I want a very select few.
Ogletree: has passed Teo in my book for now (i wanna see Teo’s 40 time… and his girlfriend but that’s another story.)
Jesse Williams: 600 pound bench, rugby player, ‘bama, 330lbs, great motor… Ya i want the guy.
Jon Hankins: He could be as good as Suh or as big of a problem as Haynesworth, but I see him as a decent gamble.
David Amerson: 6’3″ cb who makes great plays on the ball and lots of picks? Sign me up! My favorite CB prospect since Patrick Peterson.

        • Dan T January 23, 2013, 9:22 pm Reply

I think your selling Kawann a little Short…badabing…but I haven’t watched much or read too much about his effort level yet. I’m on board with the players your singling out for our pick if any of them are there at 23. Williams in particular would be a big time upgrade to the middle of our defense. As far as the receivers go, I’m currently on the DeAndre Hopkins bandwagon and base that on absolutely nothing but a gut feeling. I also love Bacarri Rambo because there’s no way your secondary doesn’t get better by having a guy named Rambo at Safety. I bring these last two items up mainly because it’s just way to early in the process to distinguish the most talented guys from the dudes whose names I think will look coolest on a purple jersey. That’ll sort itself out in the upcoming months, gotta love the draft.

          • Skol12 January 23, 2013, 9:38 pm Reply

Hopkins could be good, a lot of these receivers up top could be but they are all such gambles. I do like Deandre tho but he could easily bust.
As for Bacarri Rambo… Get him! A guy named Rambo can’t be a bust right?

        • Malte January 24, 2013, 3:53 am Reply

I would really like for us to get Ogletree. I think we need a pressence in the middle and I’m not sure you can find that in the 3rd. I think we will go WR in the 2nd either Quinton Patton or Markus Wheton are being very good and competetive at the Senior Bowl

          • Skol12 January 24, 2013, 6:23 am Reply

Don’t judge too much off the senior bowl, look at Dontrai Poe or Brian Quick from last year; rose to the second round and then was unproductive in the NFL. I think for wr we should get Dwayne Bowe and rely on Bowe/Harvin/Childs/Wright/Simpson.

  4. allmad777 March 27, 2013, 12:45 am Reply

Nice but patterson over allen my dream. then with 52 i really really want the vikes to take ryan swope maybe not 52 but i don’t want to miss him either. so maybe no wr in first round I don’t care i want swope. look him up.

    • Skol12 March 27, 2013, 3:09 am Reply

Could take Patterson and Swope. Patterson plays outside and Swope plays slot. Wright could use some competition he didn’t perform THAT good last year.

  5. Jeremy March 27, 2013, 1:22 am Reply

My opinion I would take Rhodes over minter. I think a guy that could potentially be a shutdown corner is more valuable than a 2nd rd linebacker. I like Arthur brown more than minter

    • allmad777 March 27, 2013, 1:39 am Reply

I like brown also over all lb.

      • Jeremy March 27, 2013, 2:20 am Reply

Yeah I would like to see someone like fluker fall too us just for trade purposes at number 23 I think the colts and or packers would be interested in trading up for him and if they start fighting over him we could see a couple mid or later round picks thrown our way…it would be funny to do the same thing we did last year trade 1 spot back to the colts and get a 3rd or 4th out of the deal!…it would give us a lot of picks to play with and we would still be looking at pretty much the same options if we only trade a few spots back

      • Scott March 28, 2013, 8:45 pm Reply

I’m on the Xavier Rhodes and Arthur Brown train all the way. NFL.com compares Rhodes to Browner (Seattle) because of his size and nastiness, and Arthur Brown to NaVorro Bowman (SF). Those types of players really can change the image of a defense. Grab them both in the first round and lets get ready for some football! Grab Patton, or Williams in the 2nd, and Swope or Da’Rick Rodgers in the 3rd. We don’t need a WR that bad to get desperate in the 1st.

        • Norseman66 March 28, 2013, 10:40 pm Reply

I definitely would embrace Arthur Brown wearing purple. I really really hope the Vikes do not draft Teo. Brown would be a much better fit for their defense. I think Teo would get torched in coverage.

    • Brett Anderson March 27, 2013, 8:40 am Reply

I’m just concerned about what the Vikes do at MLB if we don’t address it early in the draft.

      • Jeremy March 27, 2013, 11:41 am Reply

Well I like the bostic guy either in the second or third he looks pretty solid

  6. Mark S March 27, 2013, 5:43 am Reply

How could you not take Werner? If Werner is there he has way too much value to pass.
This guy is ranked #6 at cbssports.com. #9 at nationalfootballpost.com
    #11 at nepatriotsdraft.com. #15 at walterfootball.com (hopkins is #43).
    #11 at mockingthedraft.com. #5 at thehuddlereport.com (hopkins is 30).
    #5 at drafttek.com (hopkins is #46).

I just cannot see how the Vikings would pass up a talent like that falling into their laps. You have to consider Allen & Robison are both over 30, and in the last year of their deals. Griffen is also in the last year of his deal.

    More on Werner.
    http://www.nfl.com/draft/2013/profiles/bjoern-werner?id=2540141
Werner was good in 2011, but was great in 2012, earning ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors after leading the conference in sacks (13). He also had 42 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 8 passes break-ups.

If for some reason other teams let him pass by then the Vikings would be very wise to just take the BPA.

After that I could take Patterson or even Hankins.

    • Brett Anderson March 27, 2013, 8:40 am Reply

I really, really wanted to. Just felt we had to address the two positions of need. You’ve almost talked me into it though… Maybe next time. :)

      Thanks for stopping by.

      • Mark S March 27, 2013, 8:11 pm Reply

I think you have to draft BPA. Spielman has already stated that by signing Jennings it eliminates the need to go WR in the first round. Sure he still can do it if he feels the player is worthy. Allen may be worthy but he has yet to work out. I think Hopkins would be good too.

But Werner is clearly the BPA. It is a unique situation in that the Vikings have their 3 best defensive ends entering the last year of their contracts. We can hope they re-sign two but there is no guarantee. I look at it being similar to when the Giants drafted Jason Pierre-Paul. They had Tuck, Osi, and Kiwanuka at the time and really did not need JPP. But they were very wise to get him.

I just think that you cannot pass on quality big men in the draft. LBs and WRs can be found later. Lots of those players turn out good. DTs and DEs need to be grabbed early and often.

All the Vikings need is one injury and then it is Reed and Johnson playing some snaps. Not good.

        • Skol12 March 27, 2013, 8:49 pm Reply

I agree but it could also free us up to make a trade. Plus Werner could be phenomenal for the next decade plus. At the same time drafting in the twenties you don’t have to go bpa because its already quite risky.

  7. joeisme March 27, 2013, 10:29 pm Reply

It would be ludicrous for the Packers to take a WR in the first 4 rounds let alone round 1! They have Cobb-Nelson-Jones-Boykin and they re-signed Finley. WR is one of their strongest positions. They can score with anybody, they just can’t stop the other team from scoring. They need help immediately at LT-3/4DE-SS-RB. They could also use help at C-DT-ILB. They can’t waste any picks on guys who won’t see the field for a year or two like another WR.

    • Brett March 27, 2013, 10:39 pm Reply

Thanks for stopping by Joeisme. I went with Patterson because the Packers do not have a #1 receiver despite all those targets you mentioned. Having those targets will allow the Packers to ease Patterson into the system unlike what he would be asked to do in MN. I’d actually argue that some of the Packers biggest needs are on offense. Center, running back, wide receiver, offensive tackle… Anyway, I understand where you’re considering coming from.

Honestly I’d prefer if the Packers just took a kicker.

  8. Norseman66 March 28, 2013, 8:53 am Reply

! am very leery of taking Allen in the 1st round since he has already had 1 surgery on his knee and is still dealing with another knee injury. Too much of a risk. I would rather(in fact very much hoping) the Vikes take DeAndre Hopkins. The kid is a physical WR and has great hands. I would take him over any other WR in the 1st round.

I still truly believe the chance of the Vikings picking twice in the 1st round is small.Ricky likes to trade back. The 25th pick is a perfect landing spot for another team to trade back in the 1st round for a QB. I am pretty sure he has let other teams know that either the 23rd or 25th pick is up for auction.

Demontre Moore is way over rated and will not be a 1st round pick.

No Sheldon Richardson in the top 32?
Teo and Sylvester over Rhodes, Richardson, and Trufant? Is this a nightmare?

    • Brett Anderson April 23, 2013, 11:18 pm Reply

Actually, that’s a mistake. Wow… How the heck did I miss Richardson… Going to need to fix that now. Darn…

But yes, Te’o and Sylvester over Trufant and Rhodes.

      Your nightmare, maybe.
