Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported today the Indianapolis Colts will officially announce tomorrow in a press conference that they will be moving forward without Peyton Manning as quarterback. This news shouldn’t be particularly surprising to anyone as it has been well known the Colts would select [supposed] prodigy Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the first pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. After going 2-14 last season, the Colts have had a complete overhaul from the top down. Supposedly, Manning preferred  to stay in Indianapolis but the Colts just don’t want him – displayed by the fact that they never even attempted to engage in negotiations with him.

So, here it is – the inevitable question:

With Peyton Manning now becoming a free agent, would you want the veteran quarterback to man the helm in Minnesota?

The Vikings are notorious for going after veteran players past their prime (not saying Manning is…). While I would like to think that they will stay true to becoming a younger team and developing Christian Ponder, there is a part of me that wonders if they would really go after Manning.

Honestly, I’m not sure that they could realistically pursue the pricey passer due to our situation with the salary cap. But just as a hypothetical, would you have Peyton Manning as quarterback of the Vikings? Vote below and give us your thoughts in the comments.

  1. Who wouldnt want Manning as their qb? But the reality is there’s no way Vikes even try to pursue him. Like Brett said there’s no cap room and Rick is going younger, no doubt about it, imo.

    • Actually, looks like most wouldn’t want the Vikings to take him (according to our poll… not that it’s scientific or anything).

I’m one of the people that does not want to see Manning as a Viking… for multiple reasons. One, I think the price tag would be so steep when there are question marks surrounding how he will perform after the surgeries and missing an entire year. Two, I don’t think, even with the addition of Manning, that we could realistically take a shot at the Superbowl… so what would be the point for such a temporary signing? Three, I think it would really hurt the development and confidence of Ponder.

I guess ultimately, I feel it would not be in the best interest of the team long term. Gotta stop trying to bring in these stop-gap, ‘win now’, temporary “solutions” at quarterback.

  2. We just doesn’t have the team around him to be able to win enough games to get to the big one. I think this would just delay our rebuilding process and we would be with a stop-gap veteran once again.. We gotta know if we have a franchise guy or not

  3. IF they can get him for a cheap 1 year deal, bring in vjax, keep shiancoe, draft Kalil, get Finnegan, Chris cook comes back and AP is 100% then I’m almost ok with having Peyton

    • Jake, what do you consider cheap enough? Peyton will probably want 15 million or more a year. And why keep washed up Shianco?
